The Operation
The surgery was a fairly complex being that my leg was in such horrific shape. I was under the knife for 4 hours. These are the steps that were take according to the resident doctor. First they made a series of incisions along the side of my leg. One about 6" along my hip, another about 1 1/2" in the middle of my femur and another about 1" just above my knee. They then drilled a hole at the top of the femur passed a wire down the middle of the bone, shifting and readjusting all the breaks which there were 8 of them using the various incisions they made down my leg. They then guided thru a 3/8" diameter titanium rod the full length of the femur and placed one screw just below the hip and 2 screws just above the knee. Most of the major breaks were just above the knee and they were at very sharp angles some of the other breaks were in the middle of the femur but were not as steep of an angle. The only good thing is and I am lucky this is that there is no damage to my hip or damage to my knee.
